Harry McMahon - Landscapes & Everything Else

Landscapes

Octogenarian Harry McMahon has been painting landscapes in watercolours and oils since 1968. In those early days he sought out “paintable places”, those already painted by professional artists. He soon learned that instead he had to immerse himself, to walk for days on end, to dwell at length, to subconsciously internalise the lie of the land, sea and sky.  Only then could he express his feelings through paintings reflecting all weathers and all seasons. Harry’s paintings evoke a timeless sense of place; something magical seems to happen between the brushstrokes.

Ready for anything that might lighten the day, Harry has drawn upon his academic background in Physics, Education and, after retirement, Fine and Applied Art, to break away from landscape painting. In addition to his several one-man landscape shows he has exhibited paintings devoted to science and mathematics, to expression of the impact of the Troubles on personal and collective memory, and of all things, to movieland; the last an unlikely consequence of his searching for an anagram of his name. His modus operandi ranges from the deadly serious to the frankly hilarious.
