Reimagining the Familiar
Paul is a self-taught artist who uses expressive colour to capture his emotional responses to the landscape. The work is intuitive and uses the features of the landscape to inform his imagination, embracing history as well as the here and now.
His work asks us to look at the North Coast in a different way, engaging us emotionally as well as visually. It is a landscape he loves, and he would like us to rethink the familiar. With non naturalistic colour and expressive mark making he shapes revisualized panoramas with mixed media.
The same way of working is extended to his native Belfast, in pictures which he imbues with sentiment, but which are never sentimental.
Paul is conscious that the magnificent landscape of the North Coast constantly changes through the seasons and that helps him reinterpret and reinvent it on paper or canvas.
